Travel Notes

Dine on the Moon

Text by Teguh Sudarisman

Vertigo Grill + Moon Bar

As six PM approaches, the skies to the west of Bangkok display shades of pink with delightful splashes of purple. A beautiful sunset, even if it is slightly obscured by evening mists. This is the enchanting view enjoyed by those sitting and savoring their drinks at the Moon Bar, on the rooftop of the 61-story Banyan Tree Hotel Bangkok. Far below, a long queue of vehicles snakes along Sathorn Nua Road across from the hotel. Those poor fools down there certainly aren't enjoying the beauty of this Bangkok evening; quite a contrast.

Since its opening in January 2002, the Vertigo Grill + Moon Bar offers two things no other restaurant has: a stunning sunset view from the highest open space in Bangkok, and a 360-degree panorama of the entire city – the Royal Palace, Royal Chapel, Wat Pho Temple, the National Museum, and the Chao Praya River. It's no wonder that that same year, Vertigo was proclaimed The Best New Restaurant by the magazine Bangkok Dining & Entertainment.

With a capacity for 150 guests, the Vertigo Grill is divided by short stairways into three parts: Neptune, the private party lounge; the dining courtyard; and the Moon Bar, at the restaurant's highest point. The restaurant's design makes guests feel as if they're on the deck of a ship at sea.

Weather permitting, the Moon Bar is open daily from 5 PM to 1 AM, while the restaurant is open from 6.30 to 10.30 PM. If you come with a partner, spend your evening at the Moon Bar with a Moon Romance, the signature drink made from melon vodka, green crème de menthe, peach liqueur and lime juice. And when night has fallen, while watching the sparkling lights from all over the city, you can try the Vertigo Grill's two signature dishes – Marinated Tuna Tartar with avocado, tomato, sour cream, and salmon roe, and Medallion of Five Spiced Minced Duck with foie gras, endive marmalade, and cinnamon orange sauce.
