Travel Notes

Renaissancing Bandung

Text by Teguh Sudarisman

G.H. Universal Hotel

If you've ever been to upper Bandung and stayed at the Green Hill Cottages, you will be surprised to hear that the cottages' owner has converted it into a five-star hotel, called the G.H. Universal Hotel; the G.H. stands for Green Hill.

In classic renaissance style and designed by the owner's daughter, the construction of the new hotel took four and a half years to complete. The five large domes on the rooftop, decorated with paintings and statues in Italian style, make this hotel different from any other in Bandung. The repetition of design between the doors and windows creates a very pleasing effect. The grey paint gives an initial impression as if the walls have not been painted, but guests are immediately impressed when they examine the details up close.

Although it will only be officially opened in early 2009, since June the 104-room hotel has been full of guests; on weekdays for business meetings and on weekends for families holidaying in Bandung.

Another special feature of this five-story hotel is the rooftop chapel, which accommodates 75 guests and offers a 360-degree panorama of the city of Bandung. It's no surprise that the chapel has become a favorite place of wedding parties and similar events. With a ballroom that holds 1000 guests or can be converted into six meeting rooms, as well as four other meeting rooms at the rooftop, the G.H. Universal Hotel provides an exciting new atmosphere for MICE activities in Bandung.

The G.H. Universal Hotel has 53 Superior rooms, 30 Deluxe King, 18 Deluxe Double Queen, one Junior Suite, and two Presidential Suites. Every Deluxe room and Suite is equipped with a balcony. The plan is to expand the hotel to have 300 rooms, five restaurants, a café and a rooftop bar. The hotel's spa, massage, sauna, whirlpool, fitness, and coffee shop facilities are in a separate two-story building, and there is parking for 800 vehicles.
